Etsy Treasury

Wow! Rebecca and I just realized today that we have had our items on Etsy featured in 18 treasuries since we opened our little store! If you are not familiar with what a “treasury” is, it’s a collection of items arranged in an artistic way, either based on color or theme, or both! People make treasuries in order to feature items they like (you don’t include your own), and there are various treasury “teams,” for promotion and marketing. It is really fun to make a treasury, searching Etsy for just the right thing to go with your theme. Here is one that has my “Laramie” natural stone and button bracelet. It was “curated” or put together by SherriKayDesigns. This shop has gorgeous handmade glass and lucite beaded necklaces, bracelets, rings and brooches. Check her out:

This is the latest one I made for the “nonteam” treasury team. It’s called a nonteam because it’s a group, but there are no requirements for membership like some teams have. We use themes based on ideas from the Etsy Merchandising desk based on current shopping trends. I wanted to do something rustic with a farmhouse feel.

Treasuries are so fun, they are kind of addictive! And it’s so exciting to get included in one! Thanks again, Sherry!

Mocha Slush!

I have never been a “cup a day” kind of person. I try to avoid caffeine, rather than racing to it every morning.  But last summer, after a hard day of shopping, I was standing in a Target store that had a Starbucks. It was hot, I was thirsty, and I was just a little bit curious about what had caused millions of people to become devoted followers of a little mermaid on the side of a coffee cup. I knew they had some kind of icy coffee drink so I ordered a “Decaf…Tall…Mocha…Frappucino.” (Am I the only one who feels silly spouting off that kind of list to order something?)

It was DELICIOUS! It totally hit the spot with the icy chocolaty coffee taste and texture and the whipped cream on top felt like such a decadent splurge. Yum! But with the deliciousness came guilt! I am just too CHEAP to spend that kind of money on a drink on any kind of regular basis. So, now that I was mysteriously hooked, I had to find a more inexpensive substitute!

Mocha Slush

As a great starting point I went to an old trusted source of frugal recipes, a blog called “Hillbilly Housewife.” (There’s a link on the right under our ”Links!”) There is a recipe there for “Magic Milkshakes” that have made my kids happy for quite some time. It is an inexpensive milkshake (read, NO Ice Cream!) that is still thick and cold and deliciously chocolatey. So from there I experimented with the ingredients until I got something closer to Frappucino that I really liked.  Since I was nursing a baby at the time, I was literally drinking this by the blender-full, so I had to keep it decaf, and I substituted Truvia (stevia) for some of the sugar. But talk about a great way to get your calcium! Yum, Yum, Yum! So here are the ingredients:

Mocha Slush

1 1/2 cups cold water

1 Tablespoon decaf INSTANT coffee

1 Tablespoon Truvia

1 Tablespoon sugar

1 Tablespoon cocoa powder

1 Tablespoon canola (or vegetable) oil

1 Cup nonfat powdered milk

1 teaspoon vanilla

3 cups ice

1/2 cup milk

5 second spray of cooking oil spray (to help with emulsification)

Combine all ingredients into a blender. Process on low until the ice is chopped, then turn to medium for two minutes. It takes a little time for the powdered milk and cocoa powder to really absorb the liquids and blend. Pour and enjoy! Makes about 4 1/2 cups or around 35 oz.  Of course, I adjust this regularly and add a little more coffee, or less sugar or ice, depending on my mood! I find that I don’t even miss the whipped cream, but you can add it if you want an extra treat. Have fun experimenting!

Frosty Goodness!

Last week we had a terrific surprise. As we were getting ready to go for a walk, our friend AnnaMarie showed up at our house with a box of fresh, ripe apricots that she had picked from her mother’s trees on a recent trip. We were so excited! Apricots are a staple in Hungarian dessert recipes.  My mother-in-law uses apricot jam as a filling in “palicinta” or crepes along with cinnamon-sugar and walnuts. Yum! She also uses it as a filling between hazlenut cookies topped with melted chocolate.  Double yum!! So for the first time this summer, I got out the canning jars and sterilized them, peeled the apricots, pureed them and added the sugar and pectin, cooked it to boiling, and made my own apricot jam! Christmas-in-July Sale!

Rebecca and I are excited because Mayflower Market is having it’s first sale! Who doesn’t love a sale? I started thinking about it, and I realized that there is very little that I don’t buy on sale! So, to celebrate having TWO pages of items now listed in our Etsy shop, we are having a Christmas-in-July sale from now until the end of the month. Everything in the shop will be 15% off until August 1st.

Rebecca is branching out from just the crochet ponytail holders to making more amigurumi crocheted animals. Her SSSSam the snake was featured in two treasuries on Etsy and she has Clover the guinea pig on there now, too. Coming soon will be a cute little seal!

I am excited about my newest button bracelets! They are REVERSIBLE! It took me a while to figure out how to make them just the way I wanted, but now that I have the design worked out, there are so many color possibilities. The latest one I made is sized for girls, and it has colorful flowers and hot-pink buttons! The cool thing about these reversible bracelets is that they have buttons on the front and back, so even if one (or all of them) flips over, you still see the pretty part. I am so glad we started our little shop during the summer when we have had time to enjoy setting things up and just creating pretty stuff!

Scramble with the little chicks…

One of my favorite books to read to kids is “Barnyard Dance” by Sandra Boynton. It’s sort of a farmyard square dance where the animals “bow to the horse,” and “bow to the cow,” then “twirl with the pig if you know how.” They swing their partners and stomp and clap and promenade.  Continue reading

Get Ready to Celebrate!

It’s hard to believe it’s almost summer, much less the 4th of July!  Tomorrow is the summer solstice, the official kick-off of summer, and that means it’s time to start thinking about cook-outs, watermelon, and Independence Day!

Star spangled bracelet

Patriotic ponytail holder

We have been having fun making red, white, and blue bracelets and crocheted ponytail holders and have tried to quickly get them listed and available on our new Etsy site.

Here is a fun video if you want to see how to carve those beautiful watermelon roses for a nice centerpiece for your next cook out.  She makes it look so easy!  I’ll have to try it!
